One thing that disappointed me about DOS 5.0's DOSSHELL
program was the absence of a "File Edit" command that loads
the editor program with the selected file. You could, of
course, load the editor, then load the file into the editor,
but if the file is already highlighted in DOSSHELL's file
list, you shouldn't have to.
The solution I found is so simple, I am amazed that it was
not included in the initial setup. Within DOSSHELL, select
View·Program·File Lists. Highlight Editor in the Main
program group's list (but don't press <Enter>), then select
File·Properties from the menu. When the resulting dialog box
appears, press <Tab> to move to the Commands box. If the
entry doesn't read 'EDIT %1', type it in. Then press
<Enter>; this will bring you to another dialog box. Enter %F
as the Default Parameter, and press <Enter>. Once you've
completed these steps, whenever you activate the editor from
DOSSHELL, it will assume you want to load the file that's
currently selected in the file list.

Editor's Note: DOSSHELL contains all sorts of pleasant
surprises, and this is one of the best of them. %F is one of
two special parameters which you can enter in the Default
Parameter box. The other, %L (a percent sign followed by the
letter L), refers to the file you last specified.
